Art & Culture: Thos Mosher Gallery

July 13th, 2008 · No Comments

Although we prefer to stay close to home in Hancock County during July & August, occasionally a demand outside of the area beckons our call.

On a recent trip to Portland for business we popped into the Thos Moser Showroom and Gallery in Freeport while passing through on route 295. While most people equate Thos Moser with their stylized, beautiful furniture and Freeport with LL Bean and outlet stores, there is another dimension to the town that can not go unnoticed and that is the gallery of fine Maine art that is always being exhibited at Thos Moser Furniture Showroom. We think is one of the best art venues in Maine. It’s a casual, accessible gallery with original artwork hung intelligently and sensitively hung alongside the Moser’s original, fabulous furniture.

The current show, entitled “Luminous Maine”, is an impressive selection of artwork which captures Maine’s timeless mystique, with works created by a number of Maine’s most prominent, contemporary artists. This well-curated show is one of the best visual displays currently going on in Maine. Not to be missed, it will be up until September 1. A number of our favorite Maine artists are represented in the show which includes Eric Hopkins, Alan Bray, Connie Hayes, Tom Curry , Gifford Ewing and Michele Dangelo. Our friend, Philip Frey of Sullivan , also has a number of original works in the current show at the Thos Moser Gallery Showroom. Philip’s work is also being exhibited in a few other current shows around the state.  Water/Light Interface at the Shaw Gallery in Northeast Harbor ends July 16 and at the Firehouse Gallery in Damariscotta he is in the “Lure of the Sea”, which is up until August 10. Philip Frey’s giclee, signed, limited edition prints are available at the Maine Grind in downtown Ellsworth or online .

Be a local hero: Buy Maine Art! Visiting a local gallery is always an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon.
