Philip Frey - Maine Landscapes
Signed Giclée Prints

The beauty of the Maine landscape has inspired artists for centuries. The energy of the coastal areas was the creative force for early luminist painters like Fitz Hugh Lane, with the inland landscape ofMount Katahdin inspiring 20th century American painters like Mardsden Hartley. Today those same landscapes continue to be the creative influence behind many of the contemporary artists whose work is well-represented in Maines leading galleries. We are proud to represent one of these artists, Philip Frey, of who lives in the Downeast coastal community of Sullivan, Maine. He was born in Portland, Maine in 1967 and holds a BFA from Syracuse University. His energized palette of acrylic paints partnered with both subtle and bold brushstrokes gives his work a contemporary look, yet it is anchored by the subject matter of simple, rustic Maine landscapes and streetscapes that reflects his strong sense of place. Philip Frey's original and current works are in many private collections here and abroad. He is represented by a number of leading galleries and has been profiled by the nationally recognized art writer and critic, Carl Little.

On a recent visit to Philip Frey's coastal studio, which is down a winding country road that is protected by an umbrella of stately spruce and cedar trees, we were dazzled by what was a feast for the eyes. His use of bright colors and sensitivity to light are the trademark characteristics of his work and it was such a pleasure being surrounded by all that energy in his studio. Philip's generous nature and comforting smile added a particular delight to our visit. We were there on a mission as we were very excited to see and hear about his new limited edition prints that he has now made available to Its a Maine Thing.

After spending some time looking over his current and older works he explained to us that over the past several years a number of people have asked for prints of his paintings. He has responded to this request by preparing a special, limited edition, signed and numbered giclee prints. The artist has been closely involved in the creation of the prints, including the photography of the originals paintings, pre-press color proofing and the framing of the prints. These giclee prints are printed with Ultrachrome Archival Inks on archival watercolor paper.

For this first edition of twenty-five prints, Philip has signed and numbered each print, in graphite, on the front. Many contemporary artists are conflicted over the idea of reproducing their work into prints. Philip Frey recognizes that sharing his vision with others by making his work available to a wider range of people not only gives him more exposure, but makes artwork that traditionally many people can not afford more accessible. We commend Philip Frey for his sensitivity to others and are looking forward to helping him market his prints.
Each of the prints are sold unframed and collectors can expect two weeks for delivery.
