We were on the boat into our second day of the long anticipated 14 day coastal cruise that was going to include a run to Grand Manan Island in the Bay of Fundy. We had left Southwest Harbor earlier in the day on the So'Wester that we chartered from Hinckley Boat Charters. As the day progressed weather had moved in so by the time we were at Egg Rock, the entrance to Frenchman Bay, the sails had come down and we were under power. Drizzle and light fog. Just enough to keep us on our feet. We chugged along until we got to the entrance of Sorrento Harbor as the plan was to be on a mooring by nightfall. The GPS was not working correctly so we were using the charts. The fog keept moving in and out so it was challenge making sense of where the shoreline, buoys and actual harbor were. Luckily, all four of us could handle the stress and low level mental abuse that goes along with these kind of situations. The saving grace was James Bildner's Visual Crusing Guide to the Maine Coast that one of my shipmates purchased at the Maine Grind in Ellsworth before the cruise.
This dandy of a book takes the guess work out of navigating Maine’s waters. With superb attention to detail James Bildner compiled more more than 180 aerial photographs that provide fantastic photographic navigational guidance for many of Maine’s treasured harbors and hidden approaches, even in the fog. Accompanied by chart segments and recommended course lines the low-altitude photos give you an interesting perspective of the Maine coast. A must have for any mariner or a great addition to your home library for those who appreciate the Maine coast. Best used in sunny, clear weather. The Visual Crusing Guide was a God-send in Sorrento Harbor that dreary September evening. We made it safely to the mooring and settled into the evening down below in relaxed frames of mind. Situations like this demand only the best of food and drink. The Bowmore Scotch from Scotland with its peaty flavor was a marvelous accompaniment to the sublime smoke and buttery texture of the smoked salmon from Stonington Seafood. A most memorable evening. Thank you, James Bildner, for getting us there. Price: $39.95 |
